Embed learning, unlock high levels of performance
and transform culture – through coaching.
Even the most impressive-looking strategy or the best training won’t execute itself. It needs to be implemented by effective leaders, through coaching.
Coaching remains unparalleled in its ability to elicit the motivational energy required for high performance and embed the right behaviours so that the execution is as powerful as the plan. As such, coaching should be an integral part of the First-Line Manager’s role.
Organisations that develop coaching as both an individual managerial capacity and an organisational one are those most able to make the right decisions faster and navigate change for the greater good.

51% of companies with a strong coaching culture report higher revenue than their industry peer group.
88% increase in productivity when coaching and training are combined.

Research by Professor Robert Brinkerhoff, an internationally recognised expert in learning effectiveness, reveals that traditional, instructor-led training with little focus on learning follow-up creates only 15% learning transfer, meaning that only 15% of the people you train will apply what they have learned when they return to the workplace. The common denominator among the 15%, according to the same research, is management involvement.
By stark contrast, a coaching approach whereby the follow-up is as important as the design of the learning achieves a learning transfer of
85%.

The unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic and its destabilising repercussions, including the ‘Great Resignation’, have tested organisations, especially in relation to how leaders lead their workers.
The pandemic afforded people the time and space to reflect on their working lives and, more than ever before, employees are articulating their higher-level needs: for authentic connections, psychological safety, compassion, clarity and truth, growth and meaning.
We have seen successful leaders around the world respond positively, taking into account the full breadth of their employees’ needs as individuals. This is central to a ‘compassionate coaching’ approach to leadership that enables teams to thrive in times of change, reduce burnout and increase their resilience.
Compassionate coaching is goal-focused, solutions-orientated and measurable. It entails holding a non-judgmental space for the coachee in which they are encouraged to set motivating goals and explore the options that will take them from where they are now to where they want to get to. We support leaders to be able to move away from a reactive style based on their own experience towards a coaching style that empowers people to determine their own approach and holds them to account for their own performance.

Although there has been much warranted support for a growth mindset, the complexity of what leaders need in order to be successful can’t be understood by a singular mindset.
Leaders with a ‘growth mindset’ will see their people proactively respond to challenges and take calculated risks more often. But leaders who additionally possess an inclusive mindset will seek the informed opinion of others to obtain different insights and points of view and will see their teams mirroring this behaviour. Leaders who can embody an agile stance will have the ability to meet uncertainty with clarity and flexibility and will reap empowered teams with a ‘can do’ mentality. And leaders who are able to connect the day-to-day work of their teams to a compelling vision will be most adept at strengthening connections and building a culture that drives engagement and delivers desired outcomes.
